Author, Dr. Sabine Kriebel
From Cut and Paste to Mechanical Reproduction in Photography –
1920’s Dada to the present.

Looking at 1920’s Dada to the present day Dr. Kriebel will discuss how artists disassemble and reassemble the photograph to issue a subversive critique on modern society, ranging from cut and paste broadsides to sophisticated techniques of mechanical reproduction, highlighting practices in works that are also currently on display in Berlin (Alice Lex-Nerlinger at the Verborgenes Museum and Tomi Ungerer at the Michael Fuchs Galerie).

Dr. Sabine Kriebel writes on the history and theory of photography, montage, and the avant-garde of the 1920s. She has taught modern and contemporary art history at University College Cork, Ireland since 2004. Her recent book Revolutionary Beauty: The Radical Photomontages of John Heartfield appeared with University of California Press in 2014, and examines the ways in which montage deconstructs photographic illusionism as a political practice.
